A seagull flies over the California Coastal National Monument which stretches along the entire coast of California and extends 12 miles into the Pacific Ocean.  The Monument includes 20,000 rocks, islands, pinnacles and reefs.

Buford Crites

City of Palm Desert

Term Expires 12/16/2008


Buford Crites represents the City of Palm Desert on the committee. Mr. Crites, who spent two years as the monument advisory committee chairperson, has shown his active interest and support for the national monument and its future. A dedicated citizen, volunteer, professor, and a member of the city council since 1986, he served four terms as the mayor.

Born in Owensville, Mo., he moved to the desert in 1976. He attended Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo., earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. The following year Mr. Crites eared a Master of Science degree in information sciences, from Illinois State University, Normal, Ill. Buford recently retired from the College of the Desert, where he was a communication professor.

Mr. Crites has served on a number of commissions and councils, and has receive many prestigious awards for his work and service.
