BLM Implements Additional Fire Restrictions for Public Lands within the California Desert District

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), California Desert District, will implement additional fire restrictions beginning on Friday, May 23,2014 in order to reduce the risk of wildfires on public lands within portions of the Palm Springs/South Coast Field Office, The El Centro Field Office and the Ridgecrest Field Office.

Fire restrictions are necessary due to the continued and very dangerous drought and the early start to the fire season. These additional fire restrictions relate to areas that are currently in Stage III restrictions, or those areas that are deemed necessary to move into Stage III restrictions. In addition, shooting related wildland fires have steadily increased in the California Desert District since 2009.

The BLM will continue to monitor conditions and adjust fire restrictions accordingly. Complete details regarding additional fire restrictions, seasonal and year-round fire restrictions, including fire restriction area maps, can be found at: Public land users are strongly encouraged to access the information in order to become familiar with the fire restrictions and fire prevention safety tips.

Violation of these restrictions is punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000, or imprisonment of not more than 12 months, or both (43 CFR 9212.4).

Fire officials are reminding homeowners to "Take Responsibility" and keep 100 feet of clean, open space around their homes to provide defensible space and improve the chance that their homes and families can be protected in an uncontrolled wildfire.
