BLM Planning Prescribed Burn near Cameron Park

The Bureau of Land Management's Mother Lode Field Office is planning to conduct a prescribed burn at the Cameron Park unit of the Pine Hill Preserve during the first week of April. The project will be carried out when weather and fuel conditions allow for safe and successful burning.

Crews will burn brush piles created by fuel reduction activities in the fuel break paralleling Chasen Drive in Cameron Park. The prescribed burn will be managed and supervised by a BLM fuels and fire crew.

For more information call the fire and fuels management hotline, (916) 941-3155. For more information about Pine Hill Preserve and its unique resources, visit www.pinehillpreserve.org.

BLM officials expressed appreciation for community support, particularly the neighbors of the preserve, in agency efforts to provide for firefighter and public safety by reducing hazardous fuel loading.

The Preserve is home to some unique natural and biological resources including eight rare plant species growing on gabbro soil.Five of these species are federally listed under the Endangered Species Act, and four are endemic to western El Dorado County, meaning that they grow nowhere else in the world.  Most of these plants respond favorably to fire, and a few of them require fire for the germination of their seeds.

The BLM's fuels management program at preserve is designed to reduce fuel loads to protect people and property while enhancing plant species habitat.

Established in 2001 and managed by the BLM's Mother Lode Field Office to protect these plants and habitat, the preserve covers more than 4,700 acres. There are five primary units: Salmon Falls, Martel Creek, Pine Hill, Penny Lane and Cameron Park.

In February 2010, the BLM acquired Kanaka Valley, 695-acres providing an invaluable ecological corridor connecting the Salmon Falls and Martel Creek units.
