BLM Releases Environmental Study and Announces Public Meeting for Blythe Mesa Solar Project in Eastern Riverside County

Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released a joint environmental analysis with Riverside County for the proposed Blythe Mesa Solar Project in eastern Riverside County, Calif. for a 45-day public review.

The Blythe Mesa Solar Project, proposed by Renewable Resources Group, Inc. (RRG) on private land, would use solar photovoltaic technology to generate up to 485 megawatts of electricity. An 8.4-mile, 230-kilovolt generation interconnection line would connect the project to the Colorado River Substation. RRG has applied for a right-of-way from the BLM to construct 3.8 miles (approximately 58 acres) of the generation interconnection line on public lands. The entire project would occupy a total of 3,660 acres.

If approved, project construction is anticipated to occur over a three-year period. Approximately 500 daily workers would be present on site during peak construction.

The Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment (EIR/EA) evaluates potential project-related impacts on agriculture, biological resources, cultural resources, geology and soils, hazards and hazardous materials, hydrology and water quality, noise, paleontological resources, and traffic and transportation.

Community participation is a critical part of the environmental review process. A 45-day public comment period for the Draft EIR/EA begins today, June 17, 2014 and ends Friday, August 1, 2014. BLM has scheduled a public meeting to aid the public’s understanding of the project and to solicit written comments on the issues, concerns, potential impacts, alternatives, and mitigation measures that should be considered in writing the Final EIR/EA, which will be released later this year. The meeting is scheduled for:

Thursday, July 10, 2014
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
City of Blythe Multi-Purpose Room
