BLM, Point Arena Plan Discover the Coast at Point Arena Event

The Community of Point Arena and the Bureau of Land Management are inviting the public to Discover the Coast at Point Arena on Saturday, July 19.

The Bureau of Land Management acquired an additional 410 acres of the Cypress Abbey Ranch adjacent to the Stornetta Public Lands last year. The BLM acquired 123 acres within the city limits of Point Arena of the Cypress Abbey Ranch in January 2012 as the Phase 1 purchase.

A series of guided hikes will leave City Hall starting at 8 a.m. The hiking route takes about 1.5 hours with a slight climb returning to City Hall. Hikes are:

  • 8 a.m., birding walk
  • 9 a.m., native plant walk
  • 10 a.m., geology walk
  • 11 a.m., family walk
  • 11 a.m., cultural walk
In addition, the following guided walks will leave from the Point Arena Lighthouse:
  • 9 – 9:45 a.m., cultural history walk led by Isaac Rios, Tribal member of the Manchester-Point Arena Band of Pomo Indians, tour guide for Point Arena Light Station and Chris Lloyd, BLM archaeologist.
  • 10-10:45 a.m., marine mammal walk led by Jodi Smith, executive director of Naked Whale Research.
  • 11-11:45 a.m., wildflower walk led by Nancy Morin, president of the Dorothy King Young Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.
Food booths will be open at the lighthouse from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and free tours of the tower will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

A food court and kids crafts will be held at City Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1 p.m., a ceremony will be held there with awards presentations and other events including a Pomo Indian dance, speakers, Pacific Community Charter School poem reading and Jane Reichhold haiku accompanied by the Ernest Boch Bell Ringers Quartet.

At 4 p.m., the movie "Rebels With a Cause" will be shown at the Arena Theater, followed by a sunset walk from City Hall at 8:15 p.m.
