Bureau of Land Management to Conduct Prescribed Burn in Laguna-Sweetwater

The Bureau of Land Management's Hollister Field Office plans to conduct a prescribed burn in February and March in southern San Benito County. Approximately 100 acres will be burned in the Laguna Mountain-Sweetwater area to reduce hazard fuels and improve wildlife habitat.

Certain weather conditions - temperature, humidity, precipitation and wind - must be met for the prescribed burn to take place and control smoke. The prescribed burn will be conducted safely when the wind speeds are low and the weather is within the target ranges. It will be postponed if the conditions are not right.

"The goal of the prescribed burn is to improve wildlife habitat and reduce brush and other hazard fuels in the area. The mosaic burn pattern will increase native ecosystems, improve water quality in the watershed and help provide for public and firefighter safety," said Mike Chiodini, Hollister Field Office Battalion Chief.

BLM will conduct the prescribed burn with interagency and landowner cooperation.
