BLM, Partners Planning Prescribed Burn in Weaverville Community Forest

Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management are planning a small prescribed burn in the Weaverville Community Forest for Wednesday or Thursday, April 9 or 10, depending on weather and fuel conditions.

The broadcast burn, covering up to three acres in the forest just south of Weaverville is designed to reduce buildup of fuels that could contribute to a wildfire and to improve health of the forest.

As part of the project BLM resource specialists will work with a forester from the University of California Cooperative Extension and staff from the Trinity County Resource Conservation District to set up plots to be used in research about oak responses to vegetation treatments.

The research will compare how oak stands respond to fire, mechanical thinning, or no treatment.

The burn will be conducted only if conditions allow for safe and successful burning and smoke management.

More information is available from the BLM Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100.
