Tuolumne Trail Volunteer Project Planned For National Public Lands Day

The Bureau of Land Management is inviting members of the public to help celebrate their public lands with a trail improvement project in Tuolumne County.

The National Public Lands Day event will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m., or when the project is completed. The project site is the West Side Trail trailhead, intersection of Buchanan Road and Mira Monte Road, near Tuolumne City. Go to for a project location map.

Volunteers will help professional crews install new interpretive kiosks and signs along the West Side Trail. No previous experience is necessary. If you can do light yard work and moderate walking and lifting during the summer/warm months, you can participate in this project. Volunteers will receive NPLD t-shirts and a coupon for free admittance to public lands.

"The West Side Trail is an amazing recreational trail with outstanding views of the North Fork of the Tuolumne River canyon. The new interpretive signs will enhance the enjoyment of trail users," said James Barnes, archaeologist in the BLM Mother Lode Field Office.

Volunteers should bring lunch, hat, sunblock, long pants, long-sleeve shirts and sturdy shoes. BLM will provide gloves, eye protection, and plenty of ice-cold bottled water. Also, please leave pets at home.
