BLM Offering Firewood Cutting Permits at Lacks Creek near Arcata

The Bureau of Land Management is offering firewood permits for a designated wood cutting area in the Lacks Creek area northeast of Arcata.

Permits, which can be purchased at the Arcata Field Office, 1695 Heindon Rd. in Arcata, allow wood cutters to remove hardwoods already cut down. Cutting live or standing dead trees will not be permitted.  The trees were cut last fall in a forest health thinning project, and the wood is seasoned.

The permits cost $10 per cord, with a two-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum. The BLM will provide maps of the areas where wood cutting is allowed, and provide information on cutting regulations.  Wood cutters' chainsaws must be equipped with spark arresters in good operating condition and they must carry fully-charged fire extinguishers.

"This is an excellent way for people to stockpile winter firewood," said Dan Wooden, a BLM fuels specialist in Arcata. "The wood is already down and it’s fairly easy to get to."

In addition to getting an economical source of winter heat for their homes, Wooden noted that firewood cutters help reduce wildfire danger in Lacks Creek by removing fuel that could feed a wildfire.  For more information, contact the BLM Arcata Field Office at (707) 825-2300.
