BLM, Lost Coast Interpretive Association to Host Free Tidepool Tour at Mal Coombs Park

The fascinating life in tidepools will be featured in a free interpretive outing Saturday, July 13, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Mal Coombs Park in Shelter Cove.      Participants should meet at the Mal Coombs Park lighthouse.

Bureau of Land Management Interpretive Specialist Rachel Sowards-Thompson said participants should be prepared to get wet as they learn about the hardy forms of life that exist in tidepools.

“These plants and animals can survive crashing waves and drying sun, living in environments that change daily with the tides,” she said.

During the outing Sowards-Thompson will present information on the BLM California Coastal National Monument, the rocks and islands off the California coast that have special recognition and protection as part of the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System. The monument includes more than 20,000 features stretching the length of the coast from the mean high tide line and out 12 nautical miles.
The outing is part of a summer hikes series offered by the BLM and the Lost Coast Interpretive Association.  For more information or to sign-up, call the King Range Project Office, (707) 986-5415, or email ca338@blm.gov.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
