Old Woman Wilderness to Celebrate Anniversary of Wilderness Act

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Needles Field Office, invites the public to participate in the Old Woman Cabins Hike in the Old Woman Wilderness on December 21, 2013. The hike is part of a yearlong national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Concurrently, the Old Woman Wilderness and all wilderness units managed by the Needles Field Office are celebrating the 20th Anniversary as designated wilderness areas.

California Desert Wilderness Units were set aside to preserve unrivaled scenic, geologic, and wildlife values associated with these unique natural landscapes. In addition, these wilderness units highlight the historical and cultural values associated with ancient Indian cultures, patterns of western exploration and settlement, and sites exemplifying the mining, ranching and railroad history of the old west.

This 183,538-acre Old Woman Wilderness Area consists of the Old Woman Mountains, located in its center, and the surrounding bajadas and extensive flat aprons of the alluvium. The elevations within the wilderness extend from 2,000 feet in the drainage bottoms to over 5,300 feet at the top of Old Woman Peak. The mountains take their name from a granite monolith resembling the figure of an old woman, known as Old Woman Statue, which stands at an elevation of 5,000 feet.

Off-road vehicles will be required to participate on the Old Woman Cabins Hike. Visitors are asked to gather on the south side of Interstate 40 and Water Rd at 9:00 a.m. Motorized or mechanized travel is not allowed within wilderness.   A BLM staff member will meet and guide visitors on this wonderful adventure.   Contact the Needles Field Office at 760-326-7000 for further information and reservations. Visit www.wilderness50th.org for other events within your area.
