Bizz Johnson Trail Shuttles Planned for October
Beautiful fall weather and colors await bicyclists, joggers and hikers on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail near Susanville, and two upcoming bus shuttle opportunities will make visits convenient.
The season’s last two weekend shuttles are Saturdays, Oct. 6, (coinciding with the Lassen Land and Trails Trust’s annual Rails to Trails Festival), and Oct. 20, the yearly fall colors ride.
In the shuttle service, the Bureau of Land Management provides a truck and trailer to shuttle bikes from Susanville to three starting points along the trail. Lassen Rural Bus transports hikers and bike riders as part of its regularly scheduled service between Susanville and Westwood. The bike shuttles allow people to arrange one-way trips on the trail without having to plan their own vehicle shuttles.
Depending on the stop, hikers, runners and mountain bikers can use the trail for return trips that are 7, 18, or 30 miles in length.
To reserve space, visit the Lassen Land and Trails Trust website, www.llttweb.org, and click on the Bike the Bizz link. More information is available by calling LLTT at (530) 257-3252.
The bus and bike shuttles will depart at 8:30 a.m. from the Trust’s historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Rd., making stops at Devil’s Corral, Fredonyer Summit and Westwood. The bike shuttle fee is $3; bus fares vary according to the stop.
Participants should be at the Susanville Depot a half-hour before departure to allow time for bicycle loading.
Riders returning to the Susanville Depot after the October 6 ride will find the Rails to Trails Festival in full swing. The event features railroad handcar races, a chili cookoff, vendors, crafts, live music and refreshments.
Riders on October 6 will be sharing the trail with runners participating in the annual Bizz Johnson Half Marathon. They are urged to be careful around runners and to call out as they approach from behind.
The Bizz Johnson Trail winds about 25 miles through the rugged Susan River Canyon from the eastern-most trailhead at the Susanville Railroad Depot to the west end trailhead at Mason Station, 4.6 miles north of Westwood. It follows the old Southern Pacific Railroad’s Fernley and Lassen branch line. The trail features 12 bridges, two tunnels and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
