BLM Issues Draft Haiwee Geothermal Environmental Study for Public Comment

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and draft California Desert Conservation Area plan amendment for the Haiwee Geothermal Leasing Area (HGLA).  The study analyzes proposed geothermal exploration and development on public lands managed by the BLM north of Ridgecrest, Calif. in the Rose Valley of southwestern Inyo County.  Two public meetings will be scheduled in June to gather public comments on the DEIS.  Dates and locations of the meetings will be announced at least 15 days in advance.

The HGLA consists of approximately 22,805 acres of BLM-administered public lands, including nearly 4,460 acres subject to three pending geothermal lease applications that would be authorized under the proposed action.  The DEIS analyzes the potential environmental, social, and economic effects of several alternatives and issues raised during the public scoping process.

Public comments received will be used in the development of the Final EIS in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.  All written comments must be received by Aug. 2, 2012, and should be submitted to the BLM's California Desert District Office, Attn: Peter Godfrey, HGLA Project Manager, 22835 Calle San Juan de Los Lagos, Moreno Valley, CA 92553.
