BLM Announces Public Meetings for the Proposed McCoy Solar Energy Project Near Blythe

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will hold public meetings in Palm Desert and Blythe on the proposed McCoy Solar Energy Plant in Riverside County. The proposed site is about 13 miles northwest of Blythe, Calif.

The meetings are being held to assist the public in preparing comments for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that analyzes the impacts of the proposed project. The Palm Desert meeting will be held on June 27th at the UCR Palm Desert Campus, 75080 Frank Sinatra Dr.  On June 28th, a meeting will be held at the City of Blythe Multi-Purpose Room, 235 N. Broadway.  Both meetings are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m.

If approved, the project could generate up to 750 megawatts of solar photovoltaic power with ancillary facilities including a gen-tie line, access road and switch yard.  The project would require approximately 7,700 acres of public lands and would connect to Southern California Edison’s Colorado River Substation.

The BLM prepared a Draft EIS to analyze the site-specific impacts of the proposed project and a draft California Desert Conservation Area Plan Amendment.  The Draft EIS analyzed the site-specific impacts on air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, water resources, geological resources and hazards, hazardous materials handling, land use, noise, wilderness characteristics, visual resources and transmission system engineering, and transmission line safety.

The public comment period ends August 23, 2012.  During the comment period, BLM is soliciting public comment on issues, concerns, potential impacts, alternatives, and mitigation measures that should be considered in writing the final EIS.  Send comments to, or fax (951) 697-5229, or Jeffrey Childers, Project Manager, BLM California Desert District Office, 22835 Calle San Juan de Los Lagos, Moreno Valley, CA 92553.  Written comments will also be accepted at the public meetings.

More information about the proposed project is available on the web at, or by contacting Jeffery Childers at (951) 697-5308 or
