BLM Hiring Veterans to Staff Firefighting Crew in Sacramento

The Bureau of Land Management is using an empty Sacramento Metro Fire station in Orangevale as a home base for a new all-veteran fire crew.

The agency is currently in the process of hiring United States military veterans to staff the crew. Once hired, the BLM will train the crew in firefighting techniques and make them available as a national firefighting resource. The crew will be known as the Folsom Lake Hand Crew and will be housed at Sac Metro Fire Station 33 at 5148 Main Avenue in Orangevale.

“Our goal is two-fold,” said BLM California Fire Management Officer Paul Bannister. “First, the crew will be an additional firefighting resource for this fire season and beyond, both locally and nationally. Second, this crew is as an opportunity for veterans to get jobs, gain skills, and hopefully become interested in employment with the BLM or other federal agencies in fire or other land management areas.”

The BLM is leasing the Sac Metro fire station from Sacramento County as a duty station for the 20-person crew. The crew will focus on wildland fire suppression and fuels management. Bannister said the crew is expected to be up and running as a national firefighting resource this summer.

The BLM expects to begin a second round of hiring for veterans for next year’s crew soon. People interested in applying should check back with the USA Jobs website at
