San Joaquin River Gorge Annual Pass Now Available

The San Joaquin River Gorge Special Recreation Management Area Annual Pass is now available from the Bureau of Land Management’s Bakersfield Field Office.

The pass can be used in lieu of paying the $5 day-use fee per vehicle that goes into effect next month. The pass costs $25 and can be purchased in person at the Bakersfield Field Office, via email at or by calling (661) 391-6000.

Annual pass holders receive a unique number which should be used when completing the Recreational Use Permit yellow envelope found at the fee sites around the San Joaquin River Gorge.

“Filling out the information on the yellow-envelope, including vehicle license number, state, home zip code and annual pass number is required for use of the annual pass to be valid,” said Kelly Cole, law enforcement officer, who will be contacting visitors at the San Joaquin River Gorge to ensure they are aware of and in compliance with the new few structure. Users who fail to display the recreation permit stub (receipt) and deposit the yellow envelope in the fee tubes may be cited.

The $25 annual pass can only be used in lieu of the day- use fee. Other fees for camping, interpretive and educational programs must be paid separately using the same yellow envelopes. The day-use fee does not need to be paid by those holding “America the Beautiful” passes (Senior, Access and Volunteer). Both the Senior and Access versions of the America the Beautiful pass also discount the costs for camping and interpretive programs by half. Golden Age and Golden Access Passports also will be honored to cover the day-use fee.

Fees will be charged beginning Feb. 1. Annual passes sold both this and next month will continue to be valid until the end of February 2013, ensuring visitors are able to use the full value of the pass.

Fees are collected at the San Joaquin River Gorge Under the authority of the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act and have been established in accordance with the policy provided in that legislation. All funds collected at the San Joaquin River Gorge fee sites will be reinvested in those sites to ensure continued operation and provide for future enhancements. or via telephone at 661-391-6000.
