The U. S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting applications for summer seasonal fire fighting jobs on Northern California fire engine crews, a helicopter-borne fire crew and the Diamond Mountain Interagency Hotshots. Also available are positions in the agency’s hazardous fuels reduction program which focuses on projects to reduce wildfire danger. To receive early consideration, applications for firefighting positions must be filed over the Internet by Jan. 15, 2013. The early consideration deadline for hotshot crew jobs is Jan. 8, 2013. Job announcements, including the qualifications, salaries, application instructions and application deadlines, are available online at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Applicants should look for announcement numbers BLM-FIRE-2013-005 (engines, helitack and fuels crews) and “We recommend that people apply early to have the best chance at landing one of these jobs,” said BLM Northern California District Manager Nancy Haug. BLM’s Northern California firefighters work at stations in Susanville, Ravendale, Alturas, Cedarville and Whitethorn (King Range National Conservation Area on California’s North Coast). They work in a season that usually runs from June through mid-October. The hotshot crew is based in Susanville. “Our fire crews can be called to fires anywhere in the west, and even across the nation,” Haug said. “When not working on fires, they can be assigned to fire hazard reduction projects and natural resources improvement work.” Information on these jobs is available from BLM field offices in Alturas, (530) 233-4666; Arcata (for King Range jobs), (707) 825-2300; Cedarville, (530) 279-6101; or Susanville (for helitack crew and Ravendale and Susanville engines), (530) 257-0456. Information about hotshot jobs is available by calling the BLM Hidden Valley Fire Station, (530) 257-7601. |
