Portion of Pacific Crest Trail Closed due to Jawbone Fire

The Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed approximately 20 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail due to the Jawbone Complex Fire in northeastern Kern County.  The trail has been closed from Highway 58 in the south to the Jawbone Trail Road/Sequoia National Forest boundary to the North.

This closure was issued to provide firefighter and public safety by restricting entry into an area that may be congested with firefighters and firefighting equipment.  Only federal, state, or local officers engaged in fire, emergency, or law enforcement will be allowed on the trail until further notice.  Violation of Title 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 8364.1 is punishable by fine not to exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment not to exceed 12 months.

On August 10th a fire started in the Jawbone Recreation Area. Fire suppression activities have been initiated but the fire continues and has burned over 10,000 acres with about 30% containment.
