Construction Project to Begin on Little Darby Nature Trail near Willits |
|||||||||||
|
Construction of a new footbridge, trail improvement work and replacement of a storm-damaged culvert will get underway Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Little Darby Nature Trail near Willits, and the area will be closed until project completion targeted for Aug. 31. The U. S. Bureau of Land Management’s Arcata Field Office said the temporary closure is needed for public safety because heavy equipment will be used. The project will improve water quality by reducing reduce sediment flow into Little Creek that resulted from winter storm damage. Looping a mile through streamside, forest and chaparral habitats, the Little Darby Trail provides hiking, picnicking, dog walking and bird watching opportunities. It offers great views from the higher elevations. The trail is used by Willits students as an outdoor classroom and is the focus of a Humboldt State University student project to develop new interpretive wayside exhibits.
