BLM Plans Prescribed Fire in Lacks Creek Area near Arcata

Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management are planning a prescribed fire project in the Lacks Creek area east of Arcata, in a continuing project to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.

Officials hope to complete the seven-acre project on Wednesday, Nov. 16, but the burn will be ignited only if weather allows for safe and successful burning and smoke dispersion.  Smoke is expected to travel northeast and could be visible from the community of Hoopa for a day.

The burn at Last Prairie is designed to reduce encroachment of Douglas-fir seedlings into the meadow and open prairie areas.  Officials said maintaining the meadows and prairies preserves diverse habitat important to a variety of wildlife species.
