BLM Planning Prescribed Fire in Swasey Recreation Area
A prescribed fire designed to reduce the risk of a serious wildfire is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 14, in the Swasey Drive Recreation Area in west Redding.
The fire will be ignited only if weather and air quality conditions allow for safe and successful burning and smoke management.
The Bureau of Land Management said the 11-acre fire will reduce brush and small trees to remove fuels that could feed a wildfire. The project will be highly visible, producing significant smoke. Crews may also burn slash piles through the week, weather permitting.
Crews have already established fire control lines and reduced fuel loading in areas adjacent to the fire lines. Crews and fire engines will be on hand to manage the fire.
The fire is part of a five-year burn plan to reduce hazardous fuels on 172 acres in the recreation area, improving fire safety in the wildland-urban interface around the Swasey Recreation Area.
Monday’s planned ignition will be postponed if weather and air quality conditions are unfavorable. Officials will consider burning on acceptable days over the next two weeks.
