BLM Presents Special Achievement Award to Modoc Firefighter

Wayne Jones, a fire engine captain with the Bureau of Land Management’s Surprise Field Office in Cedarville, has received an agency special achievement award for his outstanding work in firefighting and natural resource improvement projects during the 2010 fire season.

“Over the past couple of years, Wayne has managed a top notch engine crew known for its hard work, dependability and safety,” said Garth Jeffers, fire management officer for the BLM Surprise Field Office.  “The crew repeatedly comes home with excellent evaluations after serving on incidents away from Surprise Valley.”

Jones and his crew were busy locally in the 2010 fire season, responding to about 20 fires in a region stretching from the Fort Bidwell area south the the Gerlach, Nevada area.

Jones, a Surprise Valley native and graduate of Surprise Valley High School, began his career in 1996 as a member of the Bureau of Indian Affairs-BLM fuels crew based in Cedarville.  He completed the basic and advanced courses in an interagency apprentice training program in 1997, and became a full time BLM firefighter in 1999.

When not working on fires, Jones and his crew members assist staff in the BLM field office with projects ranging from fencing  to hazardous fuels reduction.
