Public Comment Period Extended for Hollister Field Office Oil and Gas Lease Sale Environmental Assessment

A 30-day public review and comment period for a proposed oil and gas lease in Monterey County has been extended to May 6.

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Hollister Field Office has completed the environmental assessment (EA) for a proposed competitive oil and gas lease sale scheduled for September 14, 2011 and is requesting public comments.

Since oil and gas leasing on the federal mineral estate has not been active in Monterey County for almost two decades, many residents and county officials are not familiar with the federal lease process and requested more time for public review of the EA.  Following these requests, Rick Cooper, Hollister Field Office manager, agreed to extend the comment period for one additional week ending May 6, 2011.   “I believe it is important that the county have additional time to provide information to BLM, and for BLM to exchange information and clarify the procedural aspects of leasing the federal mineral estate.  It is also important that BLM strive to stay on schedule in accordance with BLM policy and guidance for oil and gas leasing,” said Cooper.

The EA was prepared to analyze the environmental impacts of leasing the mineral estate for oil and gas exploration and development.  The lands considered for competitive lease auction are located in Fresno and Monterey counties.

The EA is available online at:

Public comments may be sent by mail to the Hollister Field Office, 20 Hamilton Court, Hollister, CA 95023; or by fax (831) 630-5055; and email to
