Comment Period Extended on Proposed Agua Caliente Land Exchange

In response to public requests, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has extended the public comment period on a proposed land exchange with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians an additional month to November 19, 2010. The proposed land exchange would occur within the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

The proposed land exchange is aimed at helping implement provisions of a 1999 agreement between the tribe and BLM for coordination and cooperation in the management of federal lands within the monument and a Memorandum of Understanding for acquisition and exchange of lands within the monument. The proposed exchange will facilitate effective and efficient management of the monument by consolidating the land base and reducing the extent of “checkerboard” land ownership.

Comments on an environmental assessment of the proposal are now being accepted through November 19, 2010. The EA is available on the Palm Springs Field Office website at http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/palmsprings.html, click on BLM-Agua Caliente Land Exchange.  Send comments to John R. Kalish, Field Manager, Bureau of Land Management, 1201 Bird Center Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262.
