BLM Waives Dumont Dunes and El Mirage Fees for Veteran's Day Holiday Weekend

Recreation fees at Dumont Dunes and El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle Areas will be waived for the four-day holiday weekend beginning with Veteran’s Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, and extending through Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today.

“This Veteran’s Day weekend, we want to honor the men and women who are serving or have served our country through military service,” said Roxie Trost, BLM Barstow field office manager.  “By extending the waiver to all our visitors for this four-day weekend, we hope each person will give pause to thank those who are so selflessly serving their country enabling all of us to enjoy its bounties.”

The Dumont Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Area, near Death Valley National Park, is a treasured, remote area for off-highway vehicle recreation. Bordered by steep volcanic hills and the slow running Amargosa River, the region is easily recognized from a distance by its distinctive sand dunes. The elevation here varies from 700 feet at the river, to 1200 feet at the top of Competition Hill, the tallest of the dunes.

El Mirage, northwest of Victorville, is a flat playa, or dry lakebed, formed in a closed basin. Silt and clay are deposited into this basin during periods of heavy rain. When the "lake" dries, a hard pan dry lakebed is left.

This hard, smooth surface is ideal for the unique activities conducted at El Mirage. These include ultra-light aircraft and gyrocopter flying, model rocketry, remote control airplane flying, landsailing and straight track racing. Many private pilots land on the lakebed to spend the day. El Mirage’s distinctive landscape character has attracted the interest of many film productions over the decades.
