Experimental Stewardship Steering Committee Meets May 20-21 in Cedarville

Members of the Modoc-Washoe Experimental Stewardship Steering Committee will discuss various rangeland management issues when they hold a meeting and field tour Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21, in Cedarville.  The meeting and tour are open to the public.

On May 20, the group convenes at 9 a.m. at the Cedarville Community Church Hall, Center at Bonner Streets.  Agenda items include reports from member agencies and groups, a presentation on new rangeland monitoring technologies, updates on technical review team work, a review of updated bylaws, a review and discussion about wild horse management at Sand Creek, and a discussion about the ESP mission statement and priorities.

On May 21, the committee meets at 9 a.m. at the BLM Surprise Field Office, 602 Cressler St., and departs at 9:30 for the BLM Tuledad Grazing Allotment.  Discussions will include management successes, historical perspectives and fuels projects.  The tour returns to Cedarville at 3 p.m.  Members of the public must provide their own transportation in a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle, their own lunches and water.

The steering committee advises the BLM’s Surprise Field Office and the Modoc National Forest’s Warner Mountain Ranger District on natural resource issues and livestock grazing management on public lands.  One of three such committees established by Congress, the group works on a full consensus basis to promote innovative range management approaches and to provide incentives for excellence.

Members represent a wide range of interests, including livestock grazing permit holders, California and Nevada state wildlife agencies, the BLM, Forest Service, resource conservation districts, timber interests, environmental groups, sporting groups and local government.
