Two Open House Meetings Set for Granite Mountain Wind Energy Generation Project Near Apple Valley

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the County of San Bernardino are hosting two open house meetings on the draft environmental impact statement (EIS)/environmental impact report (EIR) for the Granite Mountain Wind Energy Project.  The proposed project would be on both public and private land in San Bernardino County, Calif.

The open house public meetings will be held on Monday, May 17, 2010 and Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  The May 17 open house meeting will be held at the Sycamore Rocks Elementary School, 23450 South Road, Apple Valley CA 92307.  The May 20 open house meeting will be held at the Lucerne Valley Senior Citizen’s Center, 10431 Allen Way, Lucerne Valley CA 92356.

Granite Mountain Wind, LLC., a subsidiary of Renewable Energy Systems, NA, has applied for a right-of-way authorization to construct a wind energy generation facility on just over 200 acres within an area of 2,086 acres of public land and 670 acres of private land about 6 miles east of Apple Valley.  The proposed 84-megawatt wind-energy generation facility would provide enough electricity to power about 70,000 average California homes. 

The project would include 28 wind turbines on the central ridge of the Granite Mountains.  Depending on the manufacturer and size, the turbines may stand up to 425 feet above ground level from the base to the uppermost tip of their blades The project also includes ancillary structures, a small onsite substation, a 4.7-mile 230-kilovolt transmission line, a proposed interconnect substation site, two fiber-optic lines, and an access road.
