Cotton Fire 98 Percent Contained

The Cotton Fire, located 5 miles west of New Cuyama along Highway 166, is now 98 percent contained. The fire started Saturday morning and quickly grew in acreage as winds pushed the fire through tall grass and brush. The Cotton Fire is currently 2,044 acres and 320 fire personnel are assigned to the fire.

Bureau of Land Management law enforcement officers continue to investigate the exact cause.

Crews will continue to work to finalize the mop up operations and begin fire suppression repair efforts. Firefighters will continue to monitor and work the fire for several more days. Cooler temperatures and rain in the area will also help fire suppression activities.

The Type II Incident Management Team (So Cal 3) will return command of the Cotton Fire to the local BLM unit tonight at 7 p.m.  For additional information on the Cotton Fire, call Michelle Puckett at (661) 742-4474 or Debbie Santiago at (661) 332-1754.  Information officers are also available at fire camp.
