Temporary Closure set for Part of Bizz Johnson Trail

A short stretch of the Bizz Johnson National Recreational Trail west of Susanville will be closed from Tuesday, July 19, through Thursday, July 22, while sandblasting is underway on a trestle restoration project in the Devil’s Corral area.
 
Hikers, bicyclists and equestrians will still be able to travel from Susanville west to Devil’s Corral, and east from Westwood to the construction area.
 
A detour through the construction site will be re-opened after sandblasting in the immediate vicinity of the trail is complete.
 
BLM officials cautioned horseback riders that the sandblasting operation is noisy and could startle horses.
 
Work crews are in the beginning phases of a project to rebuild the historic trestle that was heavily damaged by a wildfire in 2000.  The project will retain the historic steel part of the trestle and add a new steel span to replace the wooden structure destroyed in the fire.
 
The 270-foot-long trestle crosses the Susan River at a height of 70 feet, making it one of the most dramatic landmarks on the trail.
