BLM Lifts Fire Closure of Wilderness Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Ridgecrest Field Office, will be rescinding its temporary closure order around the BLM Owens Peak Wilderness area on July 30, 2010. The temporary closure was implemented on July 19, 2010 in response to the Indian Fire that was burning in the Indian Wells Canyon area, Owens Peak Wilderness and across the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The wilderness area is west of Ridgecrest, Calif. and U.S. 395 and north of California Highway 178 in northeastern Kern, southwestern Inyo, and extreme southeastern Tulare counties.

While these areas will be open again for public use, the public is reminded that traveling off designated routes within the Indian Wells Canyon area is illegal.  The Indian Wells Canyon area is classified as limited use lands and the only legal routes of travel within the area are those roads and trails that are designated and marked on the ground with brown numbered post.  In the Owens Peak Wilderness no motorized or mechanized travel is permitted.  The public is also reminded that staying on designated roads and trails will help the natural post fire recovery process.

For further information contact the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office, 300 S. Richmond Rd, Ridgecrest, CA 93555.  Telephone: (760) 384-5400.
