Wildfire Forces Closure of BLM Wilderness Area

A wildfire has forced a temporary closure of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Owens Peak Wilderness Area of the southeastern Sierra Nevada until further notice.  The wilderness area is west of Ridgecrest, Calif. and U.S. 395 and north of California Highway 178 in northeastern Kern, southwestern Inyo, and extreme southeastern Tulare counties.  The closure includes those portions of the Pacific Crest Trail and the Indian Wells Canyon within the Owens Peak Wilderness Area.

The fire began in the Indian Wells Canyon and continues to spread westward after having crossed the Pacific Crest Trail.  The temporary closure restricts public entry into an area that may be congested with firefighting equipment and personnel.  Exempt from the restriction are federal, state, or local officers engaged in fire, emergency, or law enforcement activities, as well as a few private property owners needing to access their private lands.

Questions about the closure should be directed to the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office, 300 S. Richmond Rd., Ridgecrest, CA 93555.  The telephone number is (760) 384-5400.  Maps of the closed area are available online at, at the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office, or at the Jawbone Visitor Station, 28111 Jawbone Canyon Rd, Cantil, CA 93518.
