Lucerne Valley Solar Project Comment Period Announced

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that the comment period on the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) and draft plan amendment for the proposed Chevron Energy Solution’s Lucerne Valley Solar Project in San Bernardino County will end May 19, 2010. A public comment meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lucerne Valley Elementary School, 10788 Barstow Road, Lucerne Valley, Calif.

Chevron Energy Solutions applied to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for a right-of-way on public lands to construct a solar photovoltaic power plant facility to be constructed on an approximate 516-acre site in San Bernardino County, Calif., approximately eight miles east of Lucerne Valley.  The project is expected to generate 45 megawatts of electricity, enough power for about 45,000 people.

The draft EIS also includes a proposed amendment to the California Desert Conservation Area Plan.  It analyzes the site-specific impacts on air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, water resources, geological resources and hazards, hazardous materials handling, land use, noise, and visual resources and transmission system engineering and transmission line safety.

Greg Thomsen, project manager, said BLM had previously announced the comment period would end May 13, but the snow storm in Washington delayed the Environmental Protection Agency's publication in the Federal Register that starts the comment period.  Further details can be found at the BLM web page:  For information contact Greg Thomsen at (951) 697-5237, or e-mail
