Alabama Hills Stewardship Group and BLM Plan Tours of Arches

The Alabama Hills Stewardship Group and the Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office are offering guided hikes to explore the arches in the Alabama Hills on March 12 and 20.

Participants should meet at the corner of Whitney Portal and Movie roads at 10 a.m. The hike, led by David Kirk, BLM Alabama Hills steward, will take about 1 ½ hours. Hikers should be in good physical shape due to one moderately strenuous portion of the route descending and climbing out of a wash. Each hiker should bring at least one liter of water.

“There are hundreds of arches throughout the Alabama Hills. Find out what geologic processes lead to their formation. This is a relatively short and moderate hike that enables you to view several arches in a seldom visited corner of the hills including the elegant “Hitching Post” Arch,” said Jim Jennings, BLM recreation planner.
