Calico Solar (SES Solar One) Project Comment Period, Workshop and Informational Meeting Set
The notice of availability for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) draft environmental impact statement (EIS) and California Energy Commission (CEC) staff assessment (SA) for the Calico Solar Project, formerly known as Stirling Energy Systems (SES) Solar One published in the Federal Register today, initiating a 90-day public comment period ending July 1, 2010. The proposed project site is located just north of Interstate 40, in San Bernardino County, Calif. about 37 miles east of Barstow and about 17 miles east of Newberry Springs.
A CEC staff workshop is scheduled for 8:00 a.m., Friday, April 16 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 2710 Lenwood Road, Barstow. The BLM has scheduled an open house/public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Newberry Springs Community Services Building, 30884 Newberry Road, Newberry Springs. The BLM will announce any future meetings at least 15 days in advance through public notices, media releases and/or mailings.
The draft EIS/SA was jointly prepared by BLM and CEC in response to Calico Solar, LLC’s application to the BLM for a right-of-way authorization and an application for certification to the CEC to construct and operate a solar power plant on 8,230 acres of public land in the Mojave Desert. The BLM may amend the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) land use plan if the project is approved.
The document was prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
A copy of the draft EIS has been sent to affected federal, state and local government agencies, local libraries and interested parties.
