BLM, Partners Will Mark Headwaters 10th Anniversary

Editors, News Directors, Assignment Editors:

Partners in the management of the Headwaters Forest Reserve will gather at the reserve on Wednesday, March 4, to mark the 10th anniversary of the transfer of the forest into public ownership.  You are welcome to attend all or part of the event, which includes speakers, lunch and a hike.

There will be opportunities for interviews with those who were involved in acquisition of the reserve and those responsible for management.   There will be information about accomplishments, including expanded public access opportunities, over the past decade.

Participants will include:
• Jim Abbott, associate state director, Bureau of Land Management
• Mike Chrisman, secretary, California Resources Agency
• Don Koch, director, California Department of Fish and Game
• Lynda Roush, field manager, BLM Arcata Field Office
• Carl Rountree, director, BLM National Landscape Conservation System
• Phil Detrich, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Schedule:
10 a.m. New interpretive center (restored engine house) opens.  Exhibits. Interview time.
11 a.m. Ceremony and speakers
Noon  Lunch
1 p.m.   Hike (2 options)
   Elk River Trail to see restoration projects (easy hike, about two miles)
   Drive to Salmon Pass trailhead, take short walk into old growth redwood

Plan to arrive at the parking area (we will use vehicle shuttles to the trailhead) by about 10 a.m.  Directions:  From Highway 101, take the Herrick Ave exit toward Elk River Rd.  Turn right on Elk River Rd.  Stay right on Elk River Road where it becomes Ridgewood Rd.  Drive 3.8 miles to the parking area.
