BLM to Use Goats for Fuel Reduction in Swasey Recreation Area |
|||||||||||
|
Sections of various trails in the Swasey Recreation Area of west Redding will be closed for short periods during a 30-day project this summer, while grazing goats are used to thin out vegetation that could feed a wildfire. The project is expected to begin in late June. Tim Bradley, fire management officer for the Bureau of Land Management Redding Field Office, said the goats will be used to reduce grasses and brush in shaded fuel breaks that have already been built, strengthening and expanding them. It is part of a long-range fuel management strategy that uses several fuel treatment methods, including mechanical removal of brush, small trees and grasses. The BLM will post signs in areas of the temporary trail closures and post information on informational bulletin boards. For more information, contact the BLM Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100. |
