BLM to Lead Guided Hike to View Headwaters Restoration Projects

People interested in forest management and restoration can get a close up look at recent projects in the Headwaters Forest Reserve, when the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)  leads a free, guided hike Saturday, June 20.

Those interested should meet at 9 a.m. at Newburg Park in Fortuna.  Hikers and BLM staff will carpool into the south part of the forest reserve for the hike in the Alica Pass area.  The BLM asks that participants call the Arcata Field Office, (707) 825-2300, to reserve space.

“We will look at the progress made in removing old logging roads to improve the health of the watershed, and at projects to thin second-growth Douglas-fir forests to accelerate redwood growth,” said Chris Heppe, BLM’s Headwaters Forest Reserve manager.

The hike is part of a year-long series of events to observe the 10th anniversary of the reserve’s transfer into public ownership.  The reserve, part of the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System, is managed by the BLM and California Department of Fish and Game to protect old growth forests and habitat.
