Improvement Projects Set to Begin on Bizz Johnson Trail Tunnels

A project to improve two historic railroad tunnels on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail begins June 15, and will continue through the summer.  The tunnels will be closed until Sept. 15, but bypass trails will allow full use of the trail between Susanville and Westwood.

Work crews will improve old timbers, seal concrete, improve drainage and seal cracks in the tunnels that were built in 1914, according to Stan Bales, outdoor recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management’s Eagle Lake Field Office.

"The tunnels are the signature landmarks of the Bizz Johnson Trail," Bales said.  "This project will make needed repairs while maintaining the historic look and feel of the structures."

Bales said the bypass trails were developed around the tunnels many years ago so that mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders would be able to travel the entire 25-mile length of the trail even if the tunnels had to be closed.

The project is being completed by Erick Ammon, Inc. of Salyer, Calif.
