Volunteers Welcome to Help at Cleanup Project at Historic Bitner Ranch
Volunteers are welcome to help staff from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with improvement projects at a historic northern Washoe County, Nev. ranch, as an observance of National Public Lands Day.
The day-long project is Saturday, Aug. 29, at the public lands of the Bitner Ranch, 58 miles east of Cedarville, Calif., (50 miles on an improved gravel road) near the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers are welcome to camp at the ranch on Friday, Aug. 28. The project site is a four-hour drive north of Reno.
Volunteers will help clean up construction debris, build fences, remove brush, install signs and repair roads. The BLM will provide tools and safety gear, and provide a barbecue meal on the project day.
Participants must provide their own camping equipment and meals (other than the barbecue).
Anyone interested can register by contacting the BLM Surprise Field Office in Cedarville at (530) 279-6101.
The Bitner Ranch includes historic buildings and corrals. The BLM manages the property as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) to conserve its historic values and natural resources. The agency is stabilizing the historic structures and plans to use the site as an interpretive area where the public can learn more about settlement of the region.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Most events in this year’s 16th annual observance will be held across the nation on Saturday, Sept. 26.
In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants planted over 1.6 million trees.
More information on the Bitner Ranch event is available by contacting Penni Borghi at the BLM Surprise Field Office. Information on National Public Lands Day is available online at www.publiclandsday.org.
