Notice of Environmental Assessment for Cultural Resources Restoration Project

The Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office will be preparing an environmental assessment to address the restoration of a damaged petroglyph site around the Crater Mountain area near Big Pine.

Damage to the petroglyph site was a result of illegal and unpermitted activity, where numerous holes were drilled into rock outcrops for the purpose of paleomagnetic study by a state university.  The BLM will oversee the process of restoring the site to its natural character.

Public comments concerning EA preparation and the restoration of this important cultural resource should be submitted within the next 30 days.  The EA will be completed this fall while the restoration project is planned for this upcoming winter/spring.

Comments can be sent to: Dan Gunn, Bureau of Land Management, Bishop Field Office, 351 Pacu Lane Suite 100, Bishop, Calif. 93514. For more information, contact Gunn at dgunn@ca.blm.gov phone (760)872-5056.
