Mudslides Cause Closure of BLM Land at Briceburg
Mudslides caused by weekend rainstorms have closed land along the Merced River at Briceburg managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s Folsom Field Office.
"Due to unstable soil conditions and a number of small mudslides, BLM is closing the area until further notice. Both the road leading to the campgrounds and Bull Creek Road are closed," said Jim Eicher, BLM associate field manager. Several small slides block the road along the Merced River.
The area was burned in the Telegraph Fire this summer, he explained. Without vegetation, rain can cause mudslides down the steep slopes. BLM has been installing culverts, spreading straw and doing other work in the burned area since the fire to try to limit erosion.
Crews have started work to stabilize the slide area and remove mud from the road.
