Burn Permits Required for Northeast California May 1, Available at BLM Offices

Permits will be required for all outdoor burning projects beginning May 1 throughout California.  In Northeast California, Bureau of Land Management offices in Alturas, Cedarville and Susanville will issue permits during regular office hours, Monday through Friday. 
 
Additionally, a BLM representative will issue permits Thursday, May 1, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Fort Bidwell Tribal Community Center, and from 1 to 3 p.m. at Jack’s General Store in Eagleville.
 
Fire officials said burning will be allowed during spring and early summer months, but stressed that permits will likely be suspended July 1.
 
Officials said burn permit holders must adhere to the burning hours shown on the permit, and are responsible for keeping their burning projects under control.  Those planning a burning project should check weather forecasts, paying particular attention to winds predicted during and after burning. 
 
Additionally:

• Burns should never be conducted on windy days.
• Burn piles must not exceed four feet in diameter.
• An adult must be present until the fire is dead out.
• Those conducting burns must have a shovel and water supply at the burn site.
• Flammable material must be removed in a 10-foot-diameter area around burn piles.

Fire officials stressed that burn permit holders can be charged for fire suppression costs if their negligence results in a fire getting out of control.
