BLM Schedules South Coast Resource Management Plan Scoping Meetings 

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office is proposing to revise its 1994 South Coast Resource Management Plan (RMP) and prepare an associated environmental impact statement (EIS). Open house and public scoping meetings have been scheduled for the following dates and locations to gather public comment regarding the proposed revision to the RMP.

The South Coast RMP provides guidance for the management of approximately 300,000 acres of BLM administered public lands in portions of five Southern California counties: San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Los Angeles.  These public lands include over 130,000 acres of surface lands and 167,000 acres of federal subsurface mineral ownership where the surface is privately owned. 

The public is strongly encouraged to participate in the planning effort by attending the meetings and providing input on BLM’s proposed planning revisions. Among the issues likely to be addressed are wildfire management, multi-jurisdictional habitat conservation plans, Otay Mountain Wilderness and land acquisitions.

The public will be able to view maps of the planning area, obtain a copy of the 1994 South Coast RMP, review proposed planning issues and criteria, and ask questions of BLM resource management and planning staff.  Comments can be submitted on site, through the mail, or via e-mail.  Early and ongoing participation is encouraged and will help determine the future management of federally managed public lands within the South Coast Management Area.
