BLM Seeks Comment on Amargosa Implementation Plan

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comment on an environmental assessment (EA) and implementation plan for the Amargosa River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).  The Amargosa ACEC encompasses 21,552 acres and is located in northeastern San Bernardino and southeastern Inyo counties near the communities of Tecopa and Death Valley Junction, California.

The Amargosa, called the “Crown Jewel of the Mojave Desert,” is the only free flowing river in the Death Valley area and provides a rare and lush riparian space. The narrow Amargosa Canyon is known for its dense greenery, complete with "hanging gardens" and a waterfall. The river flows year-long, and consequently has fostered human settlements, on and off, for the past 8,000 years, making it rich in cultural values.

The implementation plan and accompanying EA are available on-line at http://www.blm.gov/ca/barstow/index.html or by calling the BLM Barstow Field Office at (760) 252-6000. Comments and questions should be addressed to Amargosa River ACEC Plan, Bureau of Land Management, 2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, CA 92311. Comments should address the proposed ACEC implementation plan, the range of alternatives, and their environmental analysis. Comments must be received prior to the public comment closing date of July 9, 2007.

BLM will host one public meeting on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Tecopa Community Center on Hot Springs Road in Tecopa.

At the end of the public review period, BLM will analyze the comments and make appropriate changes to the implementation plan or analysis. If there are no substantial changes as a result of public review, BLM will issue a decision record for the implementation of the plan. If substantial changes are made, BLM will re-circulate the plan and EA for another review period. Upon issuance of the decision record, the plan will be subject to a 30-day appeal period.

For further information, contact the BLM Barstow Field Office at (760) 252-6000.
