News Release For Release: July 19, 2006 Fire Hazards Prompts Emergency Closure of Pacific Crest Trail Extensive damage caused by the Millard-Sawtooth Complex fire and concerns for public safety has prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement an emergency closure of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Cottonwood Trail head on the north side of Interstate 10 to the San Bernardino National Forest boundary. This temporary closure will be in affect until fire suppression and emergency stabilization has been completed, and the BLM determines the area is safe for visitors/hikers. Authority for the closure is found in 43 Code of Federal Regulations 8364.1. Tape barriers have been put up to help the public identify the closed segment of the trail. For more information contact Greg Hill, environmental coordinator for the BLM's Palm Springs Field Office, at (760) 251-4840. -BLM- California Desert District Office |
