BLM SEEKING HOSTS FOR PIT RIVER CAMPGROUND

Nestled among oaks and pines on the banks of a tumbling mountain river, the Bureau of Land Management's Pit River Campground is a great place to play. And, it can be a great place to live and work, at least temporarily.

The BLM's Alturas Field Office is seeking volunteer camp hosts for the upcoming spring, summer and fall seasons. Hosts are needed from mid April until November 1, to provide visitor information, collect camping fees and to perform light maintenance.

"The BLM provides a shaded camping area, water and a generator," said Tim Burke, manager of the Alturas Field Office. "We also provide a small stipend to help cover expenses."

The recently revamped campground features six single camping spaces, a group camping spot and a five-site picnic area. There is a kayak launch site and fishing access for the disabled. It is near California State Highway 299, about four miles west of the community of Fall River Mills.

"This is a great spot for hosts who want to have outdoor fun in their time off," Burk said. "The Pit River offers rafting, kayaking and fishing. There are great hiking areas and mountain biking routes throughout the region, and a championship golf course in Fall River Mills. There are ample opportunities for birding and wildlife watching."
