BLM El Centro Park Rangers Honored by Imperial County Healthcare Providers
Park rangers from the BLM El Centro Field Office were honored this past Sunday, May 20th 2012 for being outstanding clinicians and having demonstrated professional dedication and service providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the citizens and visitors of Imperial County, California. Park Ranger Brian Puckett was awarded Paramedic of the Year and Park Ranger Daniel Baca was awarded with Basic Life Support Provider / EMT of the Year.
These park rangers were nominated by local area hospitals, EMS Agencies, fire departments, and government entities. They were then voted on and selected by their peers, supervisors and agency administrators from the Imperial County Emergency Medical Care Committee. Nominees for both categories also included responders from municipal and county fire departments, ground and air ambulance services, and hospital emergency departments.
“Park Rangers Puckett and Baca have taken BLM EMS service to a higher level of care and quality,” said Neil Hamada, BLM Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area Manager.
The celebration and awards ceremony last weekend kicked off National Emergency Medical Services Week. National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services on medicine's "front line." Both Park Rangers are assigned to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. This area consists of almost 160,000 acres of low desert and drifting sand dunes, most of which is an open area for off-highway vehicle recreation that receives 1.2 million visitors annually. Over the past year, BLM El Centro Field Office staff responded to more than 400 medical aid and search and rescue calls. Most of these were performed in remote portions of the desert, during which EMS used off road vehicles to search for, locate, treat, and evacuate the patients.
