The Winners List

Academy Award winners were not the only celebrities holding shiny gold statues during these past few days. It's science fair season in California and students are sharing the gold! To showcase investigation, nature, and the outdoors, the BLM Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office presented Desert Studies Awards at the Palm Springs Unified School District Science Fair. Several staff from the BLM Palm Springs office served as judges. (text continues below)

Of the 266 projects, one stood out. Fifth graders Kevin Gonzales and Victor Lindo's project, What Is Under My Feet?  addressed the abundance of insects found in a variety of soils. For their project, the Cathedral City Elementary School students were presented a mini library of desert field guides donated by Friends of the Desert Mountains, the non-profit group for Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Kevin and Victor made two trips to the awards table -- they won both first place and district sweepstakes. Congratulations, Kevin and Victor, as you continue to learn about America's Great Outdoors!
