Almost 300 join 'Iconic Bike Ride'

Nearly 300 bicyclists of all ages and abilities joined the BLM Redding Field Office and its trail building partners Saturday, Nov. 6, to celebrate improvements to the Sacramento River National Recreation Trail.  The "Iconic Bike Ride" event provided riders  the opportunity to celebrate by cycling from one Shasta County icon, Shasta Dam, to another, the Sundial Bridge in Redding.

The Redding Field Office used $1.7 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to pave the trail (a gravel shoulder is provided for horses and those who prefer natural surfaces) l from the Dam to the Keswick Trailhead, where it joins Redding's  Sacramento River Trail. The paving project and celebration  involved many partners including the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, City of Redding, Sierra Pacific  Industries, the McDonnell Foundation, Turtle Bay Exploration Park and BLM-Redding.   It was the latest accomplishment in a recreation trail building effort that has resulted in about 60 miles of new trails in the Redding area in the past two years, many of them on BLM-managed public lands.

"We are pleased that BLM has been able to play a part in this partnership that is greatly improving the quality of life for our residents and visitors," said BLM Redding Field Manager Steve Anderson.  "The key to this success has been the partners common focus on community service."
