Chalfant residents plan for access to public lands
Residents of the Chalfant area north of Bishop are planning for the future as the community has grown and more people are using the adjacent public lands managed by BLM’s Bishop Field Office.
At a January 6 meeting, members of the Chalfant Public Land Stewardship (CPLS) and other residents discussed options for motorized and non-motorized recreation in the area. “We want to solve some problems that exist today and prevent problems down the road,” said Kyle Goin, CPLS Project Coordinator.
Planning for better access and providing information to users on where to go should help avoid a proliferation of routes over the public lands, he explained.
The CPLS and BLM will hold a field trip Jan. 23 to discuss options for the area. The tour will start at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 6 and Chalfant Road.
D. “Hap” Hazard, Mono County supervisor, said more areas around the state are being closed to off-highway vehicle use, which will increase pressure on areas like Chalfant. Some OHV riders from Southern California are used to riding in open areas rather than on a trail system. An organized trail system with information on user etiquette should reduce problems.
Chalfant residents are looking at options to provide access to public lands without going through a housing development and moving a motorized recreation route further away from the homes.
In March 2009, the BLM Central California Resource Advisory Council met in Lone Pine and expressed its support for the BLM to build on the grass roots effort of local leaders to develop a community-based stewardship strategy to maintain the character of the Chalfant Valley.
